Day 1 – Anchorage/Kodiak
Depart Anchorage via Alaska Airlines to Kodiak, Alaska’s largest island. Coined “The Emerald Isle,” Kodiak’s diverse habitat ranges from rugged mountains and alpine meadows to wetlands, spruce forest and grassland – all various brilliant shades of green.
Pick up your rental car (not included) and start exploring on your own. Stop at the Kodiak Visitor Center for maps and be sure to check out the museums and historic sites. Kodiak is also known for excellent birding opportunities and the local Audubon Society offers guided hikes on most Saturday’s from May through October. A schedule of their hikes is available at the Visitor Center. Overnight in Kodiak.
Insider tip: Though it adds convenience and freedom, a car is not necessary for this trip as the hotel will provide airport shuttle and offers a restaurant on site. Day trip providers also provide hotel pick up/drop off.
Day 2 – Kodiak
If your dream is to see wild bears in their natural habitat, then you’re guaranteed to enjoy today as you embark on a guided half-day bear viewing tour to the Katmai Coast or the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. An optional dinner cruise is available this evening when you return. Overnight again in Kodiak.
Day 3 – Kodiak/Anchorage
Your return flight to Anchorage is scheduled for this evening, leaving the day open for optional excursions or independent exploration. Hikers will find a network of trails around town and on the Kodiak road system, many winding through dense forest of Sitka spruce with spectacular views of the rugged coastline. Tour ends today.
