The City of Nome is situated along the frigid Bering Sea, on the southern Seward Peninsula Coast of Norton Sound. Nome’s rich gold rush history and Iditarod presence mark this region famous around the world!

During the summer of 1898, the “Three Lucky Swedes” initially discovered gold on Anvil Creek. By the next year gold was found in the beach sands for dozens of miles along the coast, spurring thousands of people to pour into the area. The population boomed to around 20,000 during the gold rush era.

Nome is home to the world’s largest gold pan, Alaska’s oldest newspaper: the Nome Nugget and the finish line of the 1,100-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race.
